Kendrick Lamar’s new album Damn. dropped last night. Anticipation was high, and Kendrick’s fans reacted to the album the way the internet has taught them to: by dissecting it for clues. "Clues about what?," you, a person who is merely content to have this album, might ask. "Clues about another album," the internet would respond. According to a theory floating around and rapidly growing, Lamar is going to release another album this Sunday, and it’s called Nation.
Shortly after K-Dot dropped DAMN, a user by the name of n9y25ah7_ hopped on Reddit with an intriguing theory on the possibility of a second Kendrick album coming Easter Sunday. As time passes, more and more users are uncovering evidence in support of the hypothesis.
“KENDRICK ‘DIES’ IN THIS ALBUM. HE GETS SHOT IN THE INTRO AND IT GOES FULL CIRCLE ON THE LAST TRACK. JESUS DIED AND WAS RESSURECTED 3 DAYS LATER ON EASTER. EASTER IS 3 DAYS FROM NOW. KENDRICK IS JESUS AND WILL BE RESURRECTED IN 3 DAYS WITH A NEW ALBUM,” n9y25ah7_ writes.
The Reddit user also referenced a tweet from TDE’s in-house producer, Sounwave, to craft another theory about a Sunday release. Sounwave posted a photo of Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne’s character from The Matrix, known for offering Keanu Reeve’s Neo a red pill and a blue pill.
In The Matrix, Morpheus famously offers Neo two pills, one blue and one red. According to the theorists, the red pill is DAMN. -- the cover of which shows Kendrick in front of a red brick wall, along with the album's title written in all-red. The next album, accordingly, will be blue-themed. Coincidentally or not, Kendrick's Spotify profile picture now shows him in front of a blue wall.
again, fans have looked to "The Heart Part 4" for possible clues
regarding the opposing colors. "My next album, the whole industry on a
ice pack," raps Kendrick, following-up with, "With TOC, you see the
flames." The "TOC" acronym had not been unpacked until now. Could it
stand for "The Other Color"?
As with all internet conspiracy theories, the clues don’t stop there, but they do get much stranger. For example, if you combine the letters in the Damn tracklist that appear against a white wall on the album’s back cover, they make an anagram for “Earth led 2 death.” Others have speculated it’s actually an anagram for “Death 2 the leader,” but there aren’t enough E’s for that to work. And on the Damn album cover, the “M” hangs over Kendrick’s head in a way that, if you squint, could look like devil horns. If you imagine similar art for an album called Nation, the “O” could look like a halo.
Kendrick season officially began on March 23 with "The Heart Part 4," on which he warned, "Y'all got 'til April the 7th to get y'all shit together." April 7th ended up being when he shared the DAMN. release
date. "The Heart Part 4" also includes the line, "I dropped one classic
and I came right back," which originally seemed to pertain to To Pimp a Butterfly and the compilation he dropped a year later, untitled unmastered. Now, though, fans are speculating that Kendrick was foreshadowing DAMN. and the album that may come on Sunday.
Last but not least, in addition to Sounwave's clues, Flying Lotus, Anna Wise and even Kenny's sister have hinted at the second LP, liking and retweeting tweets on social media.
